Entry requirements

  • Successful completion of a short skills assessment covering English, mathematics and learning style.
  • A current association with the funeral profession.
  • Access to an embalming mentor.
  • Access to sufficient embalming opportunities to achieve required practical case numbers.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Completion of necessary immunisations before practical training begins.
  • Ability to operate safely within an embalming theatre.
  • A strong attitude and work ethic.

Health requirements

The following immunisations are recommended before practical classes begin:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Tetanus
  • Tuberculosis
  • Polio

Applicants should ensure any occupational health requirements are met in good time before practical training begins.

Assessment and progression

Theoretical assessment

  • A written examination at the end of each module.
  • Each examination is independently invigilated and lasts two hours.
  • Ongoing formative assessment supports progress across the course.

Practical assessment

  • Two practical examinations are required: one standard embalming examination and one autopsy embalming examination.
  • Each practical examination lasts three hours.
  • Students are entered following tutor assessment and confirmation of readiness.

Practical case requirements

  • 25 standard (straight case) embalming cases.
  • 15 autopsy embalming cases.
  • A case report for every case must be available for examiner review.

Course fees

£6,995

This fee includes full theoretical tuition, practical tuition, equipment and facilities, PPE, theory examination venue fees and invigilator costs, and in-person tutor assessment in preparation for final practical examinations.

Curriculum overview

The syllabus is divided into five modules that progressively develop theoretical understanding and practical competence.

Module 1 – Legalities, Health and Safety, and Mathematical Calculations

  • History of embalming and professional practice
  • BIE Code of Ethics
  • Administrative procedures before embalming
  • Definition and recognition of death
  • Health and safety legislation including HSWA 1974, COSHH and REACH
  • First aid, immunity, infection control and mathematical application

Module 2 – Modern Embalming, Basic Chemistry, Histology and Body Mapping

  • Anatomical, directional and regional terminology
  • Body cavities and body mapping
  • Histology relevant to embalming practice
  • Rigor mortis and its implications
  • Embalming chemistry including fluids, pH, diffusion and osmosis
  • Disease processes, trauma, sterilisation and theatre requirements

Module 3 – Anatomy Including Circulation

  • Musculoskeletal knowledge, bones and joints
  • Disorders of the musculoskeletal system
  • Blood and tissue fluid
  • The heart: structure, function and common disorders
  • Blood vessels and systemic circulation
  • Major arteries, veins and anastomoses relevant to embalming

Module 4 – Further Anatomy and Physiology

  • Respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous and endocrine systems
  • Surface anatomy and internal structure identification
  • Embalming treatments for specific conditions
  • Post-mortem changes, discolouration and decomposition

Module 5 – Practical Embalming

  • Pre-embalming assessment and preparation
  • Selection and application of embalming chemicals
  • Removal of medical devices and implants
  • Raising vessels for injection and drainage
  • Multiple injection sites, trocar and aspiration techniques
  • Autopsy embalming and management of special conditions
  • Incision closure, setting of features, shaving, restoration and introduction to mortuary cosmetics
